We returned about 2pm, to the last 5 min - wouldn't you guess - in warm sunshine! followed up with some delicious ale, salad & pizza at where else - Marc Anthony's. Despite the rainshowers a good day on the water!

Cape Cod, but not the Elizabeth Islands - 9/22/2007 (no replies)

Rick Hens, Bruce Penn and I were stranded when the Elizabeth Islands trip disappeared, but Rick and Bruce were able to cobbled together a nice 12.35 mile show & go (we showed, so we went). While we met up in Falmouth, we launched from Monk's Park in Pocasset, paddled north around Toby's Island, southwest around Wing's Neck, southeast past the southern point of Bassett's Island, past Red Harbor, around the northern tip of Bassett's and back.

The weather was just a great early Fall "Department of Commerce" day. Clear (no fog or haze), sunny (some thin scattered, just enough to give the eyes a break every now and then), low 70s, winds 5-10 and seas 0-1. Around noon as we headed back, seas grew to 1-2 (with an occasional 3 to keep us awake) and winds grew slightly to 10-15 from the southwest so we were carried on our final northeast leg back to Monk's.

While Rick and Bruce were great to meet and excellent to paddle with, I wish the rest of the Elizabeth Islands team had arrived. As it turned out, conditions were just about perfect and would have been no problem for an intermediate paddler. So another year has passed without my doing the Elizabeth's. I guess I still have something to look forward to.

Marblehead-Misery Island - Saturday, 8/25/2007 (no replies)

You've got to love the weather guys. Saturday's prediction was for thunder and lightning storms and afternoon winds building to 15+. Thankfully, neither happened (although we have all been on the other side of a friendly prediction that went bad) and while hot, the 65/67 degree waters and a constant gentle winds kept us relatively comfortable.

Jim Brayden, our scheduled trip leader, paddled but a damaged wing had prompted him to ask Lisa Santullo to take over the leadership role in case some of us got out of hand or went swimming. Neither happened, but it was good to have Lisa at the lead once again.

Our trip was planned to be a routine Marblehead to Misery and back trip and that is exactly what we got. A high tide departure from Riverhead beach at the bottom of Marblehead harbor, a gentle one mile slither through the moorings, a quick "see if we can go fast enough so the motorboats don't see us" dash across South Channel and past Gray's Rock, another dash across Marblehead Channel (which empties both Beverly and Salem Harbors) to the seclusion of Eagle Bar (too shallow for the big boys) and the last push along the eastern edge of Salem Sound to the south coast of Misery Island. Take out and lunch on a nice sandy beach looking across the tidal divide to Little Misery Island. The rest of us (Dave Main, Tim Shields, Jackie Slivko and Debra Small) swam or did a serious wade and talked politics, while John Small went snorkeling. Our hopes for a full clam bake with lobsters were dashed when he reappeared empty handed, but his promise to make good on our expectations will not be forgotten. Our return trip was more direct and we seemed to be very comfortable as a group with an almost constant channel crossing line up. I have never seen eight paddlers maintain such a tight formation for the better part of four miles. It always feels good to thwart the attempts of the cigar smoking, Bud Light drinking stink pot drivers who would make us scatter. All told, we did 9.91 miles and I, at least, consider this to have been one of the better groups and trips.

Note: Great Misery is under the stewardship of the Trustees of Reservations and they are doing a very good job of keeping this island in great condition. We were approached by two members of their staff and asked for $5 landing fee for each non member, but we had enough family memberships within our group and they had no change for our large bills, so we skated. Still, the work they are doing is worth $5. Does any BSKC member know any Trustee? I'd be interested to know if they would entertain a "Club" membership that would cover any of us on a BSKC sponsored trip. Destinations that come to mind without doing more research include Misery, Crane Beach and Land's End.

Saturday, July 28 - Casco Bay (Portland, Maine) show & go (no replies)

Sometimes you just put the weather report in your back pocket and commit anyway. Last Saturday around Casco Bay off Portland, Maine was a good example. Forecasts of lightning storms caused most people to rethink the two hour drive for this Show & Go, but Jim Connors and I met at Eastern Prom and headed out. And while the Boston area was hammered with lightning, thunder and heavy downpours, the on-shore winds kept things clear over the waters of Casco Bay. Sunny, warm and only intermittent wisps of fog made the day glorious.

We crossed the busy channels near Fort Georges and headed on the outside of Little and Great Diamond Islands. The main channel parallel to our track and inside Peaks Island was of note if only because of limited boat traffic. Bad weather reports and high fuel costs may have contributed, but it was nice to have a relatively calm environment surrounding us. We lunched at Great Diamond Cove and took time to wander around the old Army brick living quarters (now condos) surrounding the parade grounds.

On the return paddle, we were keeping a weather eye on the (duh) weather. but had enough time to explore Fort Georges before returning. Our boats were secure on our trucks before a gentle rain began . Again, sometimes you just put the weather report in your back pocket and commit anyway.

Trip Report Stephens Field - Saquish & Clarks 7-14-07 ( 9.5mi )

Well - several days have passed and I wanted to do a report. Jerry's girlfriend Marilyn I thought would be coming; it turns out she's new to paddling, even though she has a nice new Boreal fiberglass boat. And Monika cancelled - something came up. So it was Jerry, Mike & myself, getting on the water with a very light breeze and exceptionally calm seas. And the blessing of the fleet in the inner protected harbor. So I offered that we might make for a more aggressive paddle and head out past the breakwater directly for the tip of Long ( Plymouth) beach and pass Bug Light, land on the beautiful sands of Saquish, then proceed after a break around Clarks Island and back. So this we did and conditions were very favorable. We got out in no time to the tip of Long Beach. Jerry was interested in the shore birds, the laughing gulls and terns. Finally closing the gap on Bug Light we hit moderately strong current, although it was only 20 min from hi, trying to push us right into the side of the light, Awhile later we were landed in amidst dozens of beach goers on Saquish- a good lunch stop to stretch and chat.

Onward around Clark's, observing a sailboat race, if not two, hugging the shore and admiring the varied architecture on this historic outpost ( where 13 generations ago the pilgrims had there first church service on pulpit rock, as the history goes ) Our remaining trip back was generally uneventful, but we did have some "interesting" water in our channel crossings; plus the wind shifted about 2pm from light NE to moderate SE at 2 pm. As we approached Stephens field my lower back was saying enough! for paddling today. WE met Scott from the Wednesday night paddlers coming in on an inaugural sail - he bought a nice small sailboat complete with trailer - in fine shape for a mere $900 and was very happy with it. I started chatting with a woman landing her small, recreational plastic 12' boat, proud of our trip - she stunned me saying she had just done the same trip just ahead of us! Very admirable, as Sandy had done a lot more work than us with our long sea kayaks. In my form , I gave her my card & later emailed her club information with an invitation to join us another time.

Jerry & I followed up with some nice grilled sausage from Piantedosi's in No Plymouth, and some fine Steel Rail Ale from Berkshire Brewing on my porch. I'm constantly amazed that a good ale never tastes better than after a good workout on the water.

Jerry left to join Marilyn for an evening at Waterfire in Providence; then he was off to Reykjavik, Iceland and Barcelona, Spain on business.

We must do this again! Soon !

Hello everyone!

Eight BSKC night owls departed the Greasey Pole put-in @ 8:30 P.M. (Civil Twilight). The moon was already up. Moonrise was 7:23 P.M. The wind was less than 10 knots with about 20% cloud cover. The % cloud cover incresed significantly in the first 45 minutes of the paddle and then the moon disappeared behind the clouds. Gloucester harbor was ominously quiet for the week after Memorial Day. Only 1 pleasure craft was seen coming out of the Annisquam River. We saw only 3 fishing vessels. The flash of Graves Light House and the Boston city lights were visible on the horizon. We toured the inner harbor, came out, and cut across to the Hammond Castle area. A small group had a fire going on the baech at the secluded cove of Stage Fort Park. This was a good beginning of the season night paddle and great for doing a gear shake-down - reflective tape positioning, headlamps, strobes, bow and stern lights. We returned to the put-in at 10:30 P.M. after covering a distance of 6 NM.

The Islands were pretty much deserted. No campers or rangers were found.

We skipped Bumpkin as the hour was getting late and no one cared to stop.

4 launched from Hingham Harbor, we met one more on Grape and another on Peddocks, where we at lunch.
Ice cream at the hull ferry stop. All returned save, safe sound and tired after circumnavigating the bay.

Nice first club paddle of the year - we launched 6:15pm from Shell Point on this clear evening to light (brisk) winds which seemed to subside as we got going out for a circumnav of the harbor, heading out past a lone (1) powerboat in motion - and crossed the channel and approached fairly close to the Buzzards Bay end of the Cape Cod Canal. It must have been slack water, at the green bells on our side weren't listing at all. We turned around & headed up past Sias Point, Onset Island, past the 2 marinas past Wickets Island, and back around the point to witness a "very dangerous" fox on the shore ( sorry, you had to be there to know the reality! ) and took out about 8:!5 to one of the best sunsets there could be over - I didn't make this up - Sunset Cove.

Charles River Cleanup (no replies)

Great dedication was displayed along several levels yesterday by those BSKC members who returned their love to the Charles River. Cleanups are not pleasant and the Charles may be better than years ago, but the trash is still nasty. Rubber gloves were the order for the day. And there was no lack of trash to pluck from the (soon to be?) crystal waters. The trophy for best trash item hauled into a kayak by a BSKC member goes to Ann Barker. She "rescued" the river from the indignity of a pair of floating trousers. Leather trousers. Circa 1950. Bell bottoms. Brown. The only question that remains after they dry is whether they look more stunning on Ann..... or Townsend.

The BSKC "experimental on the water" group consisted of our coordinator (with the Charles River Conservancy) Robert Canterbury, Ann Barker, Townsend Barker, David Parent, Jenifer Siebrasse, Jackie Slivko and myself. The injured John Gamel could not paddle, but was cruising the shoreline.

This is our first foray into giving back to our community. While our group seemed happy and satisfied with their own efforts, it is clear that the BSKC could do a better job of structuring the event. This is my fault for allowing the venture to be more casual (let's meet and go help) versus a more complete, almost trip-like sense of direction and purpose. Thanks to feedback from Robert, Jenifer, Jackie et al., we will work on being more effective next year. And yes, I do think that even a less than perfect response is still better than not volunteering at all. I believe we were all united in the assessment that kayaks do add a great deal to the river's cleanup. Stay tuned and chime in if you wish.
Two separate sections launched. One was led by Jordan Jacobs. The other included new BSKC member (but experienced paddler) Scott Shear, Martin Shell and myself. Air temp 50s. Water temp 37. Variable light winds and beautiful sunshine. Scott has been out often, I've only been out twice this Spring and Martin is just getting going too. We were out for 4 1/2 hours including lunch and paddled about 11 NM. Out the harbor, headed to and around World"s End, over to Hull (next to but not through the gut) for lunch returning between Grape and Slate and back to Hingham. Great day and absolutely no other boats other than a courtesy "hello" from the new Environment patrol boat.

Recue Clinics - 7/29 (no replies)

Saturday 7/29 was a warm and sunny day. I had scheduled a rescue clinic for the morning which filled rather quickly. During the week before the clinic there was a lot of interest in the clinic so I added an afternoon session.

The sessions started out with wet exit practice. Then we moved on to paddle float rescues. For the most part, everyone managed the paddle float quite well. Next we talked about boat tows and did bow and stern contact tows. This gave folks a short break before doing more rescues. Finally, we worked on the TX rescue and the scoop rescue. At the end I shared a few tips to make the rescues more efficient, like edging your own boat and using the rescue boat to maneuver into position.

A tip for those running the clinic in the future. I broke the group into threes when practice began. This way I only had two boats being rescued at any one time. It moved along quickly and was easy for me to move between the two groups and give pointers. In the past we have done the Eskimo Rescues and the HI rescue. Since the wet exit and TX rescue are more than 90% of what is used I left the rest as an excercise for the students.

I had one student that was having trouble with the paddle float, went over to help, and managed to get capsized by the swimmer in a failed attempt as my boat was used to help balance the swimmer. I quickly swithced hands on the paddle under water, the paddle was on the wrong side of the boat, and did my offside roll with the right hand end of the paddle in my left hand. There was much applause when I surfaced back up. The next attempt for the swimmer to get back in their boat was succesful as well.
Bruce Gordon

We launched from Old Quarry in Stonington with a crowd (more than 20) of other kayakers from all over. They went to the right and we went to the left up to an area near Frenchman's Bay. We had not been to the northern part of the bay and it seemed like the southern end would be very crowded. We had planned to circumnavigate Isle Au Haute, but the weather forecast was not good. Rain and high winds were forecast for the evening and the next day. We paddled out to the an island to be named later and set up camp with everything tied down and a rain fly over the tent and a cooking area. Another couple showed up to share the island, they were heading for Doliver from the Reach, but decided to hold up here and ride out the weather. Through the night and the next day the wind blew a steady 25 knots with gusts to 35 and enough rain to be annoying. The island was fairly large and we explored every inch. The only paddlers we saw was an Outward Bound trip heading for the Wooden Boat School. They were having a very hard time of it. The third day was a beauty. We explored Eggemonggin Reach and the Mita Islands in the area for future reference. We paddled by the Wooden Boat School, but did not stop. The Outward Bound crew was out having a water fight - we gave them a wide girth. My shoulder has been acting up lately and this was my first long paddle of the season. Some of the islands in this area are in really bad shape, more junk on them than any I have seen. We saw eagles catch fish, osprey called out from trees just behind us and many song birds filled the trees. A really nice spot to spend a few days away from everything. On the 4th we paddled back to the put in, loaded the car and drove home. My should we the worse for wear. I'll need physical therapy to keep the shoulder going during the rest of the kayak season. Can't wait for our next trip on the 14th.
