Planning 2 day trip over the Columbus holiday (Oct 10, 11, 12) weekend if the weather is good. Water is some what cold so wet suits are a minimum. The trip will be from Harpswell Me, to Little Snow Island (about 7 miles). Bring all the stuff you need, so some camping experience required. Send me an e-mail if you are interested. This will only go if the weather is good (no Rain) and winds are forecast below 20 knots. There are no facilities on the island, all water and it's a leave no trace island. - Not to mention quite small (hence little snow), but there are 3 camps sites. Been there a few times and always a good paddle with lots of sailboats.

Saturday, July 28 - Casco Bay (Portland, Maine) show & go (no replies)

Picking up the slack from a canceled trip, I shall be heading to Portland, Maine for a day of gentle cruising in Casco Bay. Interested? Just show up at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 AM launch. Participants should be members of the BSKC, experience level should be a comfortable experienced beginner, kayak should be a sea kayak over 14' with bulkheads, you should have done a wet exit, gear must include spray skirt, PFD (worn and fastened properly), paddle, paddle float and pump, hydration, hat, sun glasses, sun screen. Radios, GPS, tow gear or any other safety gear is a plus. Plan on packing you own lunch to enjoy on an island (Great Diamond?). Return to launch site around 4 PM (with lots of latitude for conditions and participant preferences). Hang around for drinks and an early dinner somewhere along Portland's waterfront, if you can. Freeport is just a few miles up the road. Can you spell shopping?

Directions: 95 North through Massachusetts, New Hampshire and into Maine to Exit 44 (South Portland/Downtown Portland) onto 295 North. Take Exit 7 (Franklin Street/US1A). Turn right onto 1A South (Franklin Arterial). Almost to the harbor, turn left onto Fore Street which becomes Eastern Prom. After left hand bend, take first right onto Cutter Street (down hill, over railroad tracks) and unload on right near low building. (Park back up the hill on the right). There are facilities for changing and a head-break before launching. Plan on two hours and 115 miles (measured from Lincoln, MA and does not include any rest breaks).

My cell is 781-330-9332 if you go berserk.

A couple of us BSKC paddlers are thinking of an easy midday paddle here in Plymouth ( from Stephens Field ) past the Mayflower and thru the inner harbor to Duxbury; we could go around Clarks Island, where the Pilgrims landed after they left P-Town. Its a noon hi, so we're looking in the 10-2 range

Looking for something to do over the 4th of July? We have booked a waterfront group campsite for 3 fun nights at Warren Island State Park on Penobscot Bay. Access is only by boat, either from the mainland in Lincolnville (near Camden) and the crossing is about 2 1/2 miles OR another option is to take the ferry over to Isleboro and then it is a 1/4 mile protected crossing in your kayak to Warren Island. Kayaks not on a vehicle are not allowed on the ferry- they must be transported on your vehicle. There is drinking water on the island and restrooms are available. No showers, but you can bathe in the bay if you dare. Everyone reponsible for their own meals. Dates are: checking in July 1 and checking out July 4th. Contact either Carol or Bob to reserve your spot. Space is limited. Lots of islands to explore, great paddling with fun people, experienced kayakers, but this is a show and go and everyone is responsible for their own safety.

I will be hosting a skills session tomorrow night. I plan on working on my roll and other self rescues. I'll also paddle down to see the nesting herons. This time I'll remember the camera.

This will be the last session as we will not be padding again until the fall.

Directions:

Lake C. directions ...
For directions: Get to Route 30 in Natick. The small boat launch is on the right west bound. It is the road directly after the cemetery on the right, if you cross the pike or get to the park entrance, you have gone too far. Turn around and go east bound. It is the first road on your left after crossing the over the pike. If you get to the stop light, you have gone too far, turn around and follow the west bound directions.

The skill sessions return to Lake C. Come and we'll work on what you need. We'll work on leaning your boat and using secondary stability. We'll also work in draw strokes to help move your boat in close when there is not enough room for more basic strokes, plus is just looks so cool to move sidesways without taking your paddle out of the water with the skulling draw. The there is always skulling for support for the brave and wet.

If you just want to paddle, we can go visit the Herons. This time I'll rememeber the camera and take pictures.

it's likly that 6/21 will be the last session unless we do one early in the week of the 25th and some one expresses interest. If any one has suggestions let us know.

Staying at Nickerston State Park the night before is a possibility, to cut down on the driving and butt-busting.

Of course, if someone from BSKC access to a Cape house, that would make things even more interesting.

Launch from the Morris Island Causeway and paddle the western flats to the extreme south tip of South Monomoy Island.

On the way, stop to hike in to the abandonned lighthouse.

Or launch from Hardings Beach, to cut down on the distance by a mile or two, if the summertime regs haven't yet kicked in.

This isn't a seals trip.

The tip of South Monomoy has fastwater and gets rough, but there's almost always an eddy to duck into.

Trip's best suited for fit paddlers who have long boats.

A long day on the water, but a lot of poking around on the flats and hanging around on the south tip of the island. Last weekend the tip waters were loaded with fish.

Predicted winds over 15 knots the night before cancel. The trip is a literal pain in the ass if the wind is up and from the southwest on the leg out.

Looks like Saturday will be the best day. We will ride the tide out and circumnavigate the Harbor. The goals is to land on Grape, Peddocks, Windmill Point (Lunch) and Bumpkin. We'll see, it's the first long paddle of the year. The plan is to launch between 9 and and return in the afternoon. We will not be in a rush as we have all day. We'll be paddling about 10 miles.

This is a show & go so you are resonsible for your own safety. The water is still cold so full wetsuits and paddle jackets are recommended. It will be a nice day, so expect alot of boat traffic.

So far very little interest - as usual ... no one will show, but we'll go anyway ...
