Tour du Teche, a 130-mile race for canoes and kayaks through the Cajun, Creole and Indian country of southern Louisiana, is on for Sept. 17-19, 2010.
It’s a non-stop race from Port Barre to Berwick, down the entire length of Bayou Teche through hardwood bottoms and past lush sugarcane fields and antebellum planation homes.
There will be a cash prize for the first team to finish. A special Cajun pirogue is being raffled off to raise money for the prize, which figures to be at least a couple of thousand dollars.
All racers who finish within the allotted 60 hours will receive a voyageur’s toque, a jaunty Bemidji wool stocking cap with the Tour du Teche leather medallion that will henceforth brand the wearer as a boatman/women with uncommon skill and determination. All participants receive the official race T-shirt.
The race will be USCA sanctioned and include first-place recognition in the following classes:
Texas (unlimited)
Texas solo
C-1 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
C-2 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
K-1 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
K-2 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
Aluminum (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
Aluminum solo (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
Standard (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
Standard solo (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
Entry fee is $75 per paddler. Each team is encourage to provide a “coureur de bois,” or bank runner, primarily responsible for preceding the team downstream and seeing to the paddlers’ needs, including transportation. For teams that cannot provide their own coureur, every effort will be made to match them up with a local volunteer who can assume the role. There is no fee for the coureur.
Food and drink will be available at official checkpoints at no cost for the racers and their coureurs. There will be a social event and racers’ meeting in the evening Thursday, Sept. 16.
More details, including rules and a entry form, are found at www.techeproject.com.
Tour du Teche is a program under The TECHE Project, a civic organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic waterway that opened wild Louisiana to the French, Acadians and others.
The Chitimacha gave the bayou its name, from a word for snake, with a legend that the waterway was formed by the decaying carcass of a huge serpent slain by the tribe’s warriors.
If anyone else is considering this, please let me know. The course is one-way and it would be great to be able to have two vechicles for shuttling.

-The Blackburn Challenge, Saturday, July 12th. 20+ miles around Cape Ann. Like a marathon, the object is to compete and finish, not necessarily to win. Truly the defining event for any serious sea kayaker. www.blackburnchallenge.com for details. [If you are not racing, Bruce's rescue clinic should be at the top of your to-do list]

-The First Annual (sic) Salem Harbor 5 mile kayak race, Saturday, July 19th. Sounds like a good cause. Details at www.salemsound.org

-Why race? Good question, but only asked by those of you who have not raced before.
-Answers like "Why not?" or "Because it's there." are impertinent and miss the point.
-What is the point, then? Well, let me go inside-out and say that it is NOT to win. Too many younger, stronger, faster, more experienced.......you get the point. You race to please yourself and you get to choose how to measure yourself. I like the challenge of an early season race because it gets me on the water early to train (Yah, every year you keep saying to yourself that you'll do some of that). Train for what? Well, the race for one thing, but more importantly there is nothing that will get you ready and eager for a full Summer of fun than to be on the water early, to be strong and to have developed your forward stroke so it is more efficient. More efficient means that you can make that crossing faster, with more confidence and without getting as tired. And it stays with you all Summer.
-As soon as the ice is gone from the Charles, I'm there. What's the rush? Well, the racing season starts early. The Snow Row in Hull was in February (in salt water and no, I'm not that crazy.). But Sunday, April 27th is the 26th running of the "RUN OF THE CHARLES" and that is reasonable and tons of fun. Only one person wins each race and class and while that won't be you or me, along with 1,800 other racers (Yes, this is a huge race), you will have fun and meet a great group of people. You can choose a 19 (yes, 19 not 1.9) mile race with 6 portages, a 9 mile race with 3 portages or a six mile loop with no portages. Classes for men and women, different boats (by length) and your age. Or you can come to the finish line at Herter Park in Brighton/Alston across from the Skating Club of Boston and experience it as a land lubber (no PFD required). Read all about it at www.charlesriver.org. Martin Shell, our President, has run the Charles many times and see where it got him.
-There is a group of us that train more or less regularly every Wednesday at 6PM and Sunday at 10AM. We start and finish at the Duck Feeding Area on the Charles in Weston across from Charles River Canoe and Kayak and the Newton Marriott. The 4.95 mile course is upstream under and around the old double arch bridge just past the Leo J. Martin Golf Course, back past the starting line, around E Island and back to the starting line. Good training against and with the current. Most of the others have ICF or Olympic boats that fly, but anyone interested is welcome to join in. Just don't expect any of them to wait for you.....
-If you want to come some day to race or would like me to stay after a race (for me about 50 -55 minutes) to help you with some tips, please call 781-257-5014 or email me at sea.kayaker@comcast.net.
-There is no downside to this (other than addiction). And yes, there are a number of races in salt water (Essex, MA - Peaks Island, Casco Bay, ME - Blackburn Challenge, circumnavigation of Cape Ann, MA - Bird Island Challenge, Wareham, MA - Westport River, MA). I'll post some races, dates and details in the future here and maybe on the BSKC event calendar.
Get on the water early and often.

Great 5.5 mile open tidal salt water race down Essex River, around Cross Island (behind Crane Beach) and back upriver to town, hot chowder, awards and general camaraderie. See blackburnchallenge.com under Essex for details. Captains meeting at 9AM. This is a great race. If it blows, the waters are open and stuff picks up fast. If its calm, it's like a beautiful stroll in the early Spring. Suitable for first time racers and the participants are user friendly.
