New England Sea Kayakers Under 40

I once asked a middle-aged, long-time paddler why is it that so many sea kayakers are in their 50s+. He said he thought it was because it was a slower, peaceful sport. That might be true, but it's also a thrilling, intoxicating rush to play in currents; to surf; to tempt the sea. So, my question is: where the hell are younger paddlers in New England?

This is a group for youngish kayakers to hook up and go paddling... especially for those of us who believe that a good paddle should be immediately followed by sipping gin at some cafe on the water or gulping beer at a dive bar or nibbling on fried seafood at a road side stand or otherwise appreciating the end to a beautiful day..

Boston Globe - Shark Attack in Chatham (no replies)

By Martin Finucane, Globe Staff | August 20, 2009

Two kayakers reported that they saw what they believe was a great white shark attacking a seal off Chatham over the weekend, saying they observed a large black fin slicing through the water near a seal in distress.

The kayakers were paddling about a third of a mile off Chatham’s Lighthouse Beach on Saturday morning near a sandbar, where there is a colony of gray seals, when they had their close encounter, said Bruce Bean, 57, of Newton, who was with a friend, Rod MacKinnon of Brewster.

The men, experienced sea kayakers who have traveled the area many times, said they saw a seal about 20 to 30 feet away jumping out of bloody water and a black fin just 4 feet away from it. The fin extended about a foot above the water.

The seal jumped again, then swam toward the men and surfaced just 5 feet from their kayaks with “a big cloud of blood surrounding him,’’ said Bean.

“There was so much blood in the water when he surfaced that we couldn’t see past his head and shoulders’’ to determine what his injuries were, Bean said. The seal then headed in the direction of the sandbar.

Greg Skomal, a shark specialist with the state Division of Marine Fisheries, said the men apparently witnessed a great white shark hunting down its prey, adding that the report came from an area where similar sightings have been made in the past.

“We think it’s a great white shark,’’ Skomal said. “There’s not many species of sharks in New England that would attack a seal. . . . It’s certainly not a new phenomenon. It’s a natural event that’s been going on for a few years.’’

With only thin hulls separating them from the ocean, the men pulled their kayaks together so as to appear bigger to the shark, following advice one of them had once received from a shark expert. Then they continued on their trip, Bean said.

Bean said the incident happened fast and was not particularly frightening, perhaps because the men did not actually see the shark. But he said it gave him second thoughts about future kayak trips.

Skomal said it was the first great white sighting he is aware of this year.

In July 2008, the carcass of a young great white washed up on a beach in Nantucket not long after lifeguards on a Martha’s Vineyard beach had reported seeing one. In August 2007, experts said after examining the carcasses of two dead seals off Chatham that they had been attacked by a great white. In 2004, a 1,700-pound great white was trapped for two weeks in a lagoon on Naushon Island, off Cape Cod.

A giant, implacable great white shark was featured as the villain in the 1975 hit movie “Jaws,’’ making an indelible mark on popular culture and heightening many people’s fear of the animals. The last shark-related death in New England was in 1936.

Hello bskc members ,

I am a returning member of bskc . During the winter , I have been paddling with the Paradise Coast Paddlers Club in Naples Fl.. It is a fairly new club but they already have over 200 members .
One of the really special places to paddle is Clam Pass . It is very close to the city but is still a very pristine environment------.peaceful , home to birds and other wildlife with tunnels through the mangroves . It is also very shallow so only canoes & kayaks can follow the trail . There are plans to dredge to allow power boat access . Power boats already have Plenty of waterways available to them . This TRULY is a remarkable and unique area . Please consider signing our petition to help preserve this area . And if you visit Naples , be sure and paddle there !

The petition website is www.thepetitionsite.com/tellafriend/4682525

Thank You & Happy Paddling,
Dinners include organic vegetables grown just a stone’s throw away. This fund-raising trip is designed for folks of all kayaking abilities and recognizes that participants are on vacation. Fun will be emphasized, as we include activities like Natural History, kayaking skills and outdoor baking classes! Your Guides/Hosts will be NSRWA President and NOLS senior instructor Doug Lowry and long time board member Carolyn Sones. The price is $1,000 per person which includes all kayaking equipment, tents and meals and snacks. You must provide your own transportation.
Wow. This is a pretty amazing price on a good submersible vhf, the Standard HX600 with li-ion battery

Best practice is to add a few squeezes of silicone sealant to the antenna port, traditionally the weakest link in submersible vhf radios and prone to moisture penetration. Also a dab or two to the external mic port which almost never gets used.

About two dozen competing Amazon retailers are offering the radio at this price.

I just bought two as gifts.

I could use advice on outfitters. My adult son and I are hoping to take a 1-week trip this summer, maybe off Maine. Both of us are reasonably experienced kayakers, although most of our experience has been whitewater and fresh-water touring, not open ocean. We are looking for an outfitter to go with because we won't know the locale. Any suggestions for good outfitters in Maine who run trips suitable for people who are not beginners but are also not expert at open-ocean paddling?
Thanks.

Please allow me to introduce myself,

I am a third year medical student at the University of Virginia and I have organized a fundraiser for the National Parkinson Foundation, Paddling for Parkinson’s.

In 2005 my grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This past year my grandfather’s brother died from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. Throughout my experience in medical school, I have seen firsthand the challenges that both patients and families deal with over Parkinson’s disease.

Beginning at the end of May in 2009, I will leave Three Forks, Montana on a 4,000 mile journey. I will be paddling my Current Designs Storm GT kayak “The Mary Agnes” solo down the Missouri River, to its junction with the Mississippi at St. Louis, and then continuing down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. I decided that a trip of this nature had the ability to not only be a fantastic personal journey, but also venue to show support for my grandfather and all people and families dealing with the effects of Parkinson’s disease. I decided to organize this trip as a fundraiser for the National Parkinson Foundation, a group dedicated to the recognition, treatment and care of people with Parkinson’s disease, people like my grandfather.

100% of all donations to the Paddling for Parkinson’s trip are going to the National Parkinson Foundation. I also have a blog that I will be updating in the months preceding my departure, and that my brother will be updating for me during my trip so that anyone interested can follow my progress. It is my hope that this trip will provide enough interest to raise $20,000 for the National Parkinson Foundation.

Please feel free to view and join my blog at [paddlingforparkinsons.blogspot.com] You can set your self up to receive updates about my trip by becoming a “follower” of the blog, available on the lower right hand part of the website. My National Parkinson Donation Site is available at [www.parkinson.org] and is also easily accessed through the blog.

Please feel free to pass this email on to anyone whom you think might be interested in my trip.
As for kayak surfing, Good Harbor Beach is excellent. The berm is shallow and waves rarely dump there as barrel rolls unless that's the way the waves are already forming.
team of 24 men who set out in 1881 to build an arctic research station.
What began as an ambitious expedition descended into a three-year
journey of starvation, mutiny, and cannibalism, which only six men
survived. The screening will be followed by a discussion with director
Gino Del Guercio of Boston University's Center for Science and Medical Journalism;
executive producer Dr. Geoffrey Clark, Harvard '60; and James Shedd,
great-great-grandson of Adolphus Greeley.
In August 1881 Lt. Adolphus W. Greely and a team of 24 determined men set out as part of the First International Polar Year to build a research station on Ellesmere Island, 450 miles from the North Pole. The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition began as the most ambitious arctic expedition in United States history, but was destined to descend into a three year journey through frozen hell - a voyage of forced retreat, starvation, brewing mutiny and cannibalism. Against all odds, six men survived.

"Abandoned in the Arctic," a new HD documentary from Cocked Hat Ventures LLC, is a story of survival and redemption in the face of staggering physical hardship and the underlying account of political scandal, cover-up and gross negligence by the U.S government. "Abandoned" attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding what really happened during the three years Greely and his men were marooned in the arctic. Did the U.S. government abandon 25 men to certain death? Did Greely's arrogance and miss-calculation result in the death of 19 men? Or, was he a skilled leader whose courage, integrity and humanity made it possible for even some to survive?

Fast-forward to June 2004 when a team of five men and one woman, including the great, great, grandson of A.W. Greely, 25 year old James Shedd, embarked on a journey to retrace the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition's footsteps in search of answers to the Greely mystery.

"Retracing the Journey," is a compelling daily journal of the team's six weeks in the arctic, written and photographed during the filming of "Abandoned in the Arctic." After landing on the treacherous coast of Canada's Ellsmere Island, the team set out in kayaks and on foot to retrace Greely's epic 250 mile retreat south to Cape Sabine.

The team's journey over rough terrain and treacherous, ice jammed waters was a constant challenge, and it was simple luck that one of the men narrowly escaped death in an unexpected and terrifying accident. Ultimately, the team experienced the arctic as a voyage of discovery merging the past with the present, while James Shedd found affirmation in the pursuit of his own Greely legacy.

The Charles River Swimming Club is looking for volunteers to help with kayak support for a one-mile swimming race.

Date: Sunday, June 15, 2008

Time: Race starts at 8am and should be over shortly after 9am; kayak volunteers should plan on being there by 6:30am (we promise you coffee)

Location: The race will start at the River Dock near the Hatch Shell and Arthur Fiedler statue on the Esplanade. The swimmers will swim a loop course in the basin between the Harvard and Longfellow bridge.

Required skills: good enough kayaking skills to reach a swimmer quickly in case a rescue is necessary (there will be a minimum of one kayaker stationed every 1/8 of a mile) and decent swimming skills. We will have a Boston Whaler on the water staffed with lifeguards.

Kayaks: we might be able to supply a couple of kayaks, but don't have enough for the whole crew. If you have your own, please plan on bringing it.

More race info: www.charlesriverswimmingclub.org
We are also looking for general volunteers to help with timing, registration, set-up and clean-up and lifeguarding. If you are interested in helping out in some shape or form, please respond via email Ulla Hester at ulla @ charlesriverswimmingclub.org.
Please forward this to anybody who might be interested.
