Wenonah Solo Plus Canoe – Used Once ($1700) (no replies)

I’m selling my Wenonah Solo Plus Canoe in Kevlar® Flex-core which weighs 51 lbs. I purchased this canoe new in December and used the canoe only one time since then due to a back injury. This boat is basically new - see description below. I'll also include two wooden oars for adults, two small oars for kids and two removable padded canoe seats that fold up.

Designed to use as both a solo and a light-duty tandem hull

The Solo Plus is a 16'6" hull with three seats... not so three can ride but to use as both a solo or a tandem canoe.

You can add a seat to some tandems for solo use, but most are too wide to reach the water well from the center. Conversely, most solos are too narrow to fit paddlers in the ends. We shaped one hull to suit solo or tandem use, and the Solo Plus is unique since it works well both ways. It's wider in the ends than most solos, yet narrower in the center than most tandems.

Used solo, it's a stable, efficient touring hull with high capacity. Tandem, it's a short, performance design. It's fast and hauls light gear.

In January 2009 Freya Hoffmeister, a 46-year-old kayaker from Husum, Germany, set out to paddle around a continent in a sea kayak. In December of that year, 322 days and over 8500 miles later, she had completed a solo circumnavigation of Australia, considered one of, if not the most challenging endeavors in the world of sea kayaking. Many other kayakers have attempted the circumnavigation since Paul Caffyn did it 27 years ago, but all of them stopped well short of the goal. Freya's "Race Around Australia" was completed in record time and established her as the first woman to complete the journey.

What made it so formidable? Huge saltwater crocodiles, great white sharks, venomous sea snakes and deadly jelly fish, massive surf, the challenge of coordinating freshwater and food dumps, three 100-mile stretches of sheer cliffs without any landing zones and dangerous cyclones were some of the most daunting threats. As an extra challenge she made an 8-day, 7-night crossing of the 350-mile-wide Gulf of Carpentaria. In spite of the physical toll of paddling in the tropical heat Freya averaged upward of 35 miles per day for nearly a year.

Wenonah Solo Plus Canoe (Kevlar flex-core) - hardly used (no replies)

I’m selling my Wenonah Solo Plus Canoe in Kevlar® Flex-core which weighs 51 lbs for $1800. I purchased this canoe new in December and used the canoe only a couple of times since then. This boat is basically new. I have oars that I’d be willing to sell as well. See description below:

It's fast and hauls light gear

17ft long - 22.5 inches wide - rudder - Red with gray - 2 water tight hatches (plastic secured outer cover with neo under covers). Very good condition.

This is an excellent beginners boat (it's what I used for the first two years). Tracks well, extremely stable and easy to steer with the rudder.

Since it is a high volume boat, it is also excellent for camping, multi-day excursions or day trips along the New England coast.

This has been used infrequently over the last few years. The usual light hull scratches in plastic. All are surface and superficial. Always stored indoors. Cleaned/Protectant every year (even the years it didn't make it out of the garage)

Asking $795 includes cockpit cover and paddle
IMPEX Susquehanna 16.5 feet, Kevlar Kayak.=$2,600

Excellent kayak for lake or ocean kayaking. We used the kayaks for one season on large lakes in New Hampshire for touring. Originally purchased for ocean touring along the Rhode Island and Massachusetts coast, we never made it that far. These kayaks have been stored inside, suspended on 'Talic' kayack racks, suspending the kayaks on 2 inch thick straps. The boats are in 'like new' condition. We always entered the boats from the water placing the paddles behind the seat combing so that the hull would not be scratched. We placed yellow duct tape behind the seat combing so as not to scratch the surface with the paddles when entering as seen in the photos (http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/boa/1747540430.html)
Feedback from one of last year's participants ...

"Just wanted to thank you for a great weekend. I thought the structure and the
content of the course were great. I learned a lot (much more than I expected)
and was glad we got to apply our new knowledge on the water immediately
following the instruction. Splitting into smaller groups in our kayaks was
most helpful. The course content was well organized and not to simple but not
to complicated either and it all related to what we were doing. The visual
aids were most helpful. ... From the materials presented it seemed like you
put much time and thought into the course. Thank you!"

About Your Instructors ...

Dave Corbin has been sea kayaking for the past 10 years, and prior to that
sailed for 20 years. His certifications include BCU 3 Star Sea, BCU Coastal
Navigation and Tidal Planning, BCU Canoe Safety, ACA Trip Leader, and he is
also a Registered Maine Guide. Steve Formisani grew up sailing and has been
sea kayaking for the last 18 years. In Sept. 2001 Steve completed a 300 mile,
28-day, solo paddle of the Maine Island Trail, without the aid of a GPS. Dave
and Steve have navigated their kayaks along most of the Maine coast, including
trips to some of its more remote islands (Vinalhaven, Swans Island, Great Wass,
Isle Au Haut, and Matinicus Rock). This is their 3rd year teaching this class.

=============================================================
Knubble Bay Camp is an Appalachian Mountain Club volunteer managed facility
located about 15 minutes south of Bath, Maine. Weekends are organized around
an all-day paddle Saturday and half-day paddle Sunday. Typically one or two
groups are formed, depending on the number and experience level of participants.
Breakfasts and Saturday dinner are provided by the volunteer committee.
Participants can share a bunk room in the cabin or tent outside. The weekends
are known for great food, paddling, friendship, and Scrabble. Additional
information about a particular weekend trip is available from the registrar.
See the KBC website for a full list of the 2010 season trips.

Tour du Teche, a 130-mile race for canoes and kayaks through the Cajun, Creole and Indian country of southern Louisiana, is on for Sept. 17-19, 2010.
It’s a non-stop race from Port Barre to Berwick, down the entire length of Bayou Teche through hardwood bottoms and past lush sugarcane fields and antebellum planation homes.
There will be a cash prize for the first team to finish. A special Cajun pirogue is being raffled off to raise money for the prize, which figures to be at least a couple of thousand dollars.
All racers who finish within the allotted 60 hours will receive a voyageur’s toque, a jaunty Bemidji wool stocking cap with the Tour du Teche leather medallion that will henceforth brand the wearer as a boatman/women with uncommon skill and determination. All participants receive the official race T-shirt.
The race will be USCA sanctioned and include first-place recognition in the following classes:
Texas (unlimited)
Texas solo
C-1 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
C-2 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
K-1 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
K-2 (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
Aluminum (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
Aluminum solo (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
Standard (sub categories: overall, women, juniors, seniors and mixed)
Standard solo (sub categories: overall, women, juniors and seniors)
Entry fee is $75 per paddler. Each team is encourage to provide a “coureur de bois,” or bank runner, primarily responsible for preceding the team downstream and seeing to the paddlers’ needs, including transportation. For teams that cannot provide their own coureur, every effort will be made to match them up with a local volunteer who can assume the role. There is no fee for the coureur.
Food and drink will be available at official checkpoints at no cost for the racers and their coureurs. There will be a social event and racers’ meeting in the evening Thursday, Sept. 16.
More details, including rules and a entry form, are found at www.techeproject.com.
Tour du Teche is a program under The TECHE Project, a civic organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic waterway that opened wild Louisiana to the French, Acadians and others.
The Chitimacha gave the bayou its name, from a word for snake, with a legend that the waterway was formed by the decaying carcass of a huge serpent slain by the tribe’s warriors.
